【Words from a Companion and also Navigator on the Counseling journey】
In a Greek mythology, there was a king named Sisyphus, but who is condemned to push a huge, heavy boulder up a hill. But only for it to roll back down each time he reaches the top and forcing him to start over again in vain repeatedly. While working in field of counseling and psychiatric departments, I seen people facing difficulties or confusion, meanwhile feeling they are burdened by a heavy stone like the one Sisyphus pushed. They were exhausted mentally and psychically but yet unsure how to let go. They kept questioning themself the "meaning to continuing" and "what is the point of this futile effort."
Such self-questioning can impact one's self valued also potentially causing pain and self-deprecation. However, this process of introspection can be the beginning of change. Perhaps for Sisyphus, taking a moment to feel his own experience, to consider different decisions, to reflect on the reasons for pushing the stone uphill, to change direction, or to let go of the stone and accept other outcomes could be transformative.
Regardless you have experience to counseling or not, I believe that self-exploration is an ongoing journey. You may currently be suffering in a situation like Sisyphus, or you might be experiencing different states. In any case, these confusion and worries are challenging and formidable yet deserve to be seen and understood. As your companion and ally on this journey, I will walk alongside you and holding a lamp to illuminate your path until you reach your destination.
During our time of counseling, I will discuss the therapeutic frameworks and methods that you feel most suitable. The effectiveness of counseling requires time to develop and ferment. Especially when similar situations or pattern keep recurring, it indicates the issues to be resolved through counseling are deeply rooted or knots are difficult to untangle. It will only tighten the knots further if forcefully pulled apart, but loosen the knots with gentle and care will help gradually in your mind.
【About My Journey】
Entering the field of psychological counseling has been a significant turning point in my life. My past experiences in various work fields and life roles have brought me different responsibilities, and I have navigated these roles with joy, distress, achievement, and disappointment.
My working experience in multinational corporations left me feeling outsider while abroad, yet upon returning, feel strangeness and distance to familiar homeland in Taiwan. In an important career positions, I struggled to discern responsibility and self-expectation while facing pressures and disappointments that contradicted my desires. While as a full-time motherhood, the performance evaluations and KPI that I used to evaluate myself and holder it dearly became useless and unmeasurable. The parenting and motherhood just leaving me feeling like I was never doing enough or doing it well.
To realizing the inevitable "unknown" and "lack of control" in life's journey, I learned and accepted how to make choices and take each step thoughtfully and with unsure but not freakout. I have come to accept imperfect outcomes and believe in my own limitations, which leading to a re-understanding of motherhood, family responsibilities, and self-expectations.
These experiences have enriched my current work in psychological counseling that allowing me to see a more diverse and dynamic flow of change. I believe that the causes behind each person's troubles are complex and intertwined. My experiences are not the example to follow but I would like to provide a source of strength for you. And I hope to encouraging you to believe in your ability to make choices when facing difficulties.
